ROCKY RIVER, Ohio — “I did not want to be a Gold Star mom,” said Marianne Scherry, mother of fallen marine, LCpl. Danny Scherry, while speaking today at a Memorial Day Ceremony planned by the Joint Veterans Council of Lakewood and Rocky River. Scherry continued in her speech to explain the significance of the Gold Star given to her at her 21-year-old son’s funeral on April 16, 2007, and the pride she has for her son’s service to his country. Scherry said he talked of becoming a Marine as early as 6th grade.

The ceremony, a moving remembrance of our fallen military, began at 10:00 a.m. in Lakewood Park Cemetery, 22025 Detroit Road in Rocky River. Korean War Veteran James Kilbane was Master of Ceremonies.

Pastor Ronald A. Johnson, of Advent Episcopal Church in Westlake, said an Invocation prayer for fallen comrades. The Rocky River High School Band, directed by Kirk Taylor, was on hand to play “The National Anthem” and “America the Beautiful.”

Rocky River Mayor Pamela Bobst and Lakewood Councilwoman-at-Large Cindy Marx welcomed the crowd and gave memorial speeches. Honor Guard FOP Lodge #25, along with local Boy and Girl Scout troops, marched the American flag before the crowd and led the gathering in the “Pledge of Allegiance.”

A twenty-one gun salute followed by the playing of “Taps” closed a very respectful and moving ceremony on a beautiful Memorial Day in Rocky River.
